Week 01 Research

Hi there,

Welcome to our project, we are Lars Smet(Developer), Hemant Gurung(Developer), Glenn Tytgat(Artist), Jeroen Vanlerberge( Artist) and Levi John(Artist).

We present you Extendo-Brawl, a fast-paced couch co-op side-scroller. Where the players have to use extendable arms to grapple and launch objects at each other while keeping up with the moving level.  Every player can score points by killing enemy players. The player with the most points at the end of the game wins.

The Game uses C# as the development language, Unity Engine 2021 as the Game engine and the source code editor we use is Visual Studio IDE.

We asked ourselves a couple of questions.

What are our core mechanics?

-Grappling to walls and the ceiling.

-Launching boxes at enemies to kill them

-Hitting players to temporarily stun them

These will be our core mechanics. The programmers already started prototyping the grappling and launcing. We also have some ideas for extra mechanics, but first we need to make sure that our core mechanics are fun and work properly.

We attached a build and gif that showcases one of our prototypes for our grapple.

Moving or stationary camera?

At first,  we wanted the camera to be stationary.  Since it is a couch co-op, we thought that made the most sense. But after getting the feedback that this could be a bit boring, we came up with a new idea. We will divide our level into "stages". In the first stage, the players are in a box with a stationary camera. After a certain amount of time, one of the walls drops and the camera starts moving until it reaches the final stage. Where again, there will be a stationary camera.

This makes the game more chaotic and fun and it also allows us to come up with interesting level designs.

Unity or Unreal?

In our group, the artists only had experience with UE4, but not with Unity. While the programming had experience with both. We decided to go for Unity since it was the easiest for the programmers and so the artists can build up some experience with Unity.

Art style?

The Game is 2.5D, which is a game that uses a 3D environment while incorporating 2D gameplay. The theme will be Sci-Fi and robots will be our characters.  Below you can see the character colour scheme that we are going for. We also thought about going for a Fall guys type theme, but in the end, we thought that the Sci-Fi idea would be the best fit for our game.

What's next?

Next week we will continue prototyping, combining our mechanics and testing out different interactions and sketching some of our art.
