Week04 The sprint has begun

Hello everybody,

This week we started our first sprint! And if we are honest, it was harder than we expected.  Our communication didn't run as smoothly as in the previous weeks and balancing the project with other obligations proved to be a challenge. But we learn from our mistakes, move on and look confidently into the future.

Gameplay

Our prototyping code, well let's say it wasn't the cleanest. But it's a prototype for a reason and it helped us get familiar with some of the systems that we would use in our actual game. During our prototyping phase, we made the mistake of mixing too many things together and coding too many things at the same time, which gave us trouble when we would combine everything. This week we decided to focus on some of the underlying systems of our game (f.e movement, getting the nearest box, health, etc) so we would have an easier time combining everything next week. Thus, there isn't a lot of code that changes visual stuff, but that should change next week.

Art

The artists were happy that the prototyping phase was over because now they could finally go loose and get down into the nitty-gritty. Enjoy some of our first assets!

After getting some useful feedback last week, we changed up our level. We decided to go back to our circular design, but now each room has a different theme. Every room has its own hazards and in the final room, we would bring all of them together. We also came to the conclusion that dying when you go out of the camera boundaries, while it is moving to the next room, is a bit lame. So we came up with the idea to make a laser appear out of the screen and make it move the player towards the next room, where the laser would disappear again.

While we're almost certain that the level will still change throughout the project and during playtesting, we're happy with the progress and we think it's going in the right way.

What's next

Next week the programmers plan on getting the box launching mechanic and some of the hazards finished. While the artists will continue to refine their current and add more assets and visual feedback.

Cya then!
